BOTOX for Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)

By Mikayla Cherneski RN

All of us deal with the somewhat annoying occurrence that is sweating. Sweating is a natural bodily function that maintains the body temperature by cooling the skin as it evaporates. When excessive sweating starts interfering with your daily life, causing embarrassment or withdrawal from certain activities, it may be time to consider treating it.

What Causes Excessive Sweating

Excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, is a condition that causes overactive sweat glands. In someone with hyperhidrosis, sweat production is much higher than necessary to keep the body at a constant temperature. The condition can cause the sweat to soak right through clothing or drip off the hands, despite wearing an antiperspirant.

The exact cause of hyperhidrosis is unknown, but it is thought to be due to an overactive sympathetic nervous system – which means that the part of your brain responsible for your fight-or-flight response may be in overdrive, causing you to sweat more. Excessive sweating can be brought on by high temperatures, our emotions, or nothing in particular.

How To Stop Excessive Sweating

Thankfully, a highly effective, safe treatment option is available at SKIN Clinics to tackle this stubborn, life-altering condition. You’ve likely heard about BOTOX® treating facial fine lines and wrinkles, but did you know it also treats several medical conditions, including hyperhidrosis?

When injected into the areas that sweat too much, BOTOX® works its magic by temporarily blocking the chemical signal that activates the sweat glands. This means we are temporarily turning the sweat glands “off.” BOTOX® can reduce up to 90% of sweating in the targeted area, and the most commonly treated areas are the armpits, hands, and feet.

What To Expect After BOTOX® For Hyperhidrosis Treatment

Excessive sweating will not increase in other body areas after being treated with BOTOX®. The medication temporarily blocks the chemical nerve signals that stimulate the sweat glands only where it is injected. When the specific sweat glands don’t receive the “message” to sweat, severe sweating is reduced to the treated area. Sweat will continue to be routinely produced in the body, but there will be no extra excessive sweating (thank goodness).

Botox for Hyperhidrosis

Our patients love this treatment because it is quick, relatively painless with virtually no downtime, minimal side effects, and works wonders. On average, patients state the effect of their BOTOX® hyperhidrosis treatment will last them about 3-4 months, with many even finding relief for up to 6 months when receiving consistent treatment. Individual results will vary as our bodies metabolize BOTOX® differently, depending on our stress levels and physical activity.

Most of our hyperhidrosis patients enroll in the Botox Access Program, a pharmacy reimbursement program. Though many health insurance plans cover all or most of the hyperhidrosis BOTOX® treatment, enrolling in the Botox Access Program will allow the first treatment to be complimentary if patients don’t have insurance or coverage. For specific details on coverage, we recommend contacting your insurance company and paying us a visit to discuss further.

If you or a loved one have been suffering from excessive sweating, now can be the time to regain control and find your confidence. A referral is not required for hyperhidrosis; call us to book a complimentary consultation with one of our SKIN experts to learn more and help relieve this bothersome condition.
