Gentle Light-Activated Treatment That Targets and Clears Sun-Damaged Skin

Metvix Photodynamic Therapy is a non-invasive, in-office procedure that treats multiple pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions found on the surface of the skin. This treatment consists of the application of a topical cream (Metvix), followed by light exposure to selectively target and destroy the atypical skin cells. At SKIN Clinics, we proudly offer this advanced therapy to clients in Calgary and the surrounding areas, delivering expert care in a welcoming, professional setting.

A Targeted Solution for Treating Sun-Damaged and Pre-Cancerous Skin

Metvix Photoactivated Treatment is Health Canada-approved to treat one of the most common types of skin cancer (superficial basal cell carcinoma) and actinic keratoses, which are lesions caused by sun damage that can turn into cancer. The Metvix (methyl aminolevulinate cream) will only react with the targeted skin cells, while the surrounding healthy skin cells receive minimal to no reaction from the treatment. The number of treatments depends on the severity of the condition; however, an average of three treatments is typical, spaced 1-6 months apart. Additional maintenance treatments are required in some cases.

At SKIN Clinics, we aim to boost your confidence and readiness for treatment. Here’s what you need to know before you arrive:

Before Your Appointment

  • Please complete your Health History and Intake Form in advance. If this isn’t possible, arrive 15 minutes early so we can assist you.
  • Let your provider know if you have any nut allergies, particularly to peanuts or almonds.
  • If you have a history of cold sores, inform us beforehand so we can arrange preventive antiviral medication if needed.

Getting Ready

  • You may take Tylenol before your appointment to help with any potential discomfort.
  • Bring protective items such as a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and long sleeves to help shield your skin from the sun after treatment.

Things to Avoid

To ensure optimal results and minimize irritation, please avoid the following:

  • UV exposure for at least 2 weeks before treatment
  • Skincare actives such as AHA/BHAs, Retinol, Hydroquinone, and Benzoyl Peroxide for a minimum of 2 weeks before
  • Avoid waxing or shaving the treatment area within 5 days of your appointment.
  • Please note, we do not offer treatment during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

After treatment, your skin embarks on a journey of healing and renewal. Discover what awaits and master the art of caring for it during recovery.

Healing & Downtime

  • Expect some redness, swelling, flaking, and peeling; these are normal and typically fade within 7–10 days.
  • Occasionally, blisters might form.
  • Sensitive skin can experience mild irritation that persists for up to four weeks.

What to Avoid

To protect your skin and support healing, please avoid:

  • Even a moment of sunlight within 48 hours post-treatment can reignite the medication’s effects.
  • Avoid hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms for at least one week post-treatment, as heat may aggravate sensitivity.
  • Reintroduce active ingredients such as AHAs, BHAs, Retinol, Hydroquinone, and Benzoyl Peroxide gradually, based on your skin’s sensitivity. Begin slowly and adjust usage as recommended to support healthy, radiant results.
  • Any laser treatments for a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks

Ongoing Care

  • Maintenance sessions may be recommended to address future sun damage or recurring lesions.

Shield your skin and preserve its glow daily with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.

Metvix therapy offers a powerful yet gentle approach to revitalizing skin. It precisely targets abnormal cells while protecting healthy tissue, stopping sun-damaged skin from worsening. This non-invasive treatment effectively tackles common problems like actinic keratoses and superficial basal cell carcinoma caused by prolonged sun exposure.

Is there downtime after treatment?

+ Prepare for some downtime. After treatment, your skin may turn red, swell, peel, or even blister for up to 10 days. It’s vital to avoid UV light in the first 48 hours; indirect sunlight could reactivate the medication. During this time, even broad-spectrum sunscreen won’t fully protect you.

What happens during an appointment?

+ The treatment begins with gentle preparation of the skin, where a nurse may remove surface crusting to enhance absorption. The Metvix cream is then applied and left on for 2.5 to 3 hours. Afterward, your medical aesthetician will activate the cream using a specialized light source.

When is the best time to book this treatment?

+ Although Metvix therapy can be performed year-round, cooler seasons such as autumn and winter are often ideal. These months naturally limit sun exposure, which helps reduce the risk of post-treatment sensitivity and ensures a smoother recovery.
