HydraFacial Aftercare: How to Protect Your Glow

Your skin is more receptive right after a HydraFacial, in a good way. Here's exactly what to do this week to make your glow last.

HydraFacial Aftercare: How to Protect Your Glow

You just left your appointment with skin that looks brighter, feels smoother, and honestly, a little addictive. That glow is real, but it's also a little fragile in the first few days. Your skin has just been deeply cleansed and exfoliated, which means it's more receptive than usual, both to good ingredients and to irritation. A few simple choices this week can help that glow last.

Here's exactly what to do (and what to skip) after your HydraFacial at SKIN Clinics.

The First 12 to 24 Hours
HydraFacial uses a vortex-based system to exfoliate and extract in the same step it delivers hydrating serums, so your skin surface is temporarily more permeable right after treatment. This is a good thing for absorption, but it also means your skin needs a short window to settle.

  • Skip makeup on the treated area for 12 to 24 hours.

  • Avoid touching or picking at your skin, even if it feels tempting.

  • Wear SPF 50 and stay out of direct sun.

  • Skip the sauna, steam room, and anything that makes you sweat heavily.

A peer-reviewed review of skin resurfacing procedures found that after microdermabrasion-style treatments, transepidermal water loss (a marker of barrier disruption) rises briefly but returns to baseline within 48 hours, which lines up with why the first day matters most (see reference 1).

The Next 5 Days: What to Leave Out of Your Routine
Your skin has just been exfoliated, so this isn't the week to layer on more active ingredients. Give your barrier a few days to fully recover before reintroducing anything strong.

  • Avoid AHA/BHA acids for 5 days.

  • Avoid retinol for 5 days.

  • Avoid hydroquinone for 5 days.

  • Avoid benzoyl peroxide for 5 days.

  • Hold off on laser treatments for 2 to 4 weeks.

A 2024 imaging study on hydradermabrasion found that stratum corneum thickness (the skin's outermost protective layer) briefly thinned right after treatment, then rebuilt to slightly above baseline by the two-week mark, which is part of why skin often looks progressively better in the days following a HydraFacial rather than only on the day of (see reference 2).

What's Normal (and What's Not)

Mild redness or a feeling of tightness in the hours after treatment is normal, especially if extractions were part of your session. It typically settles within a few hours to a day.

If your skin stays significantly red, feels hot, or develops swelling beyond the first day, contact your clinic. This isn't common with HydraFacial, but it's worth a quick check-in.

Protecting Your Results With Sun Protection
Freshly exfoliated skin is more vulnerable to UV damage, which is why sun protection matters more than usual this week. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher for daily use, and SKIN Clinics recommends stepping that up to SPF 50 specifically in the days following a HydraFacial (see reference 3).

Supporting Your Glow With the Right Skincare
Since active ingredients are off the table for a few days, this is the perfect window to focus on hydration instead.

SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel is formulated with hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5 to replenish moisture without introducing exfoliating acids or retinoids, making it a natural fit for your first few days of recovery.
